Letters and memoranda, 1817-1828.

The collection consists of eighty-nine letters addressed to Louis Philippe's intendant Pascalis relating to the purchase and commission of works of art for Louis Philippe's private collection. Written prior to his accession to the throne, the letters are detailed instructions mentioning specific works, mostly paintings, and often contain Louis Philippe's personal reactions to the artist or to the art object in question. Several of the letters concern the purchase and arrangement of furniture for Louis Philippe's private residences. Artists mentioned include Horace and Carle Vernet, Gerard, Boilly, Prud'hon, Delaroche, Isabey, Leopold Robert, Gericault, Girodet-Trioson and Ingres.

French artist. Born at La Bassée in 1761, Boilly began to paint at the age of twelve and received training from his father, Arnould Boilly, a wood-carver.
